Juvaria Khan
Founder and Executive Director
Juvaria is the founder and executive director of The Appellate Project, an award-winning organization dedicated to diversifying our highest courts. She founded The Appellate Project in 2019 after witnessing how frequently communities of color are disproportionately impacted by laws shaped without their involvement.
Juvaria’s career is dedicated to seeking justice and equity for marginalized communities. She was a federal district court clerk and worked at a large law firm before joining a civil rights advocacy organization, where she focused on discrimination claims impacting Muslim communities of color. Juvaria successfully combined impact litigation and public campaign strategies in a series of landmark cases, including a judgment against the city of Wilmington, Delaware, for refusing to allow African American Muslim children to swim in a public pool, a permanent injunction and millions in damages against a prominent neo-Nazi, and a series of successful land use lawsuits on behalf of Muslim communities denied the right to build their houses of worship.
Throughout her personal and professional experiences, Juvaria saw few attorneys and judges of color in our highest courts. This inspired her to found The Appellate Project, which has already supported over 500 first-generation law students of color with innovative appellate resources, including clerkship support, skill-building opportunities, and access to the appellate bar.
In recognition of her work, Juvaria has received the Echoing Green Fellowship, JMK Innovation Prize, Roddenberry Fellowship, American Bar Association’s Alexander Rising Star Award, South Asian Bar Association’s Racial Justice Award, South Asian Bar Association of DC's Public Sector Trailblazer Award, and the Asian American Bar Association of DC’s Community Appreciation Award.
Juvaria is a frequent public speaker on the appellate courts and race equity. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, and Teen Vogue, among others. She is a member of the Edward Coke Appellate Inn of Court, where she serves as Membership Co-Chair. Juvaria received her B.A. in Political Science and Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies from New York University and her J.D. from Columbia Law School, where she was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar.
