TAP Into Appellate Law | Inns of Court Explained
June 23, 2025
What Is an Inn of Court—And Why It Matters for Aspiring Appellate Leaders
Last month, TAP alumni had the rare opportunity to attend a private event hosted by the Edward Coke Appellate Inn of Court—the first and only American Inn of Court dedicated specifically to appellate practice. Based in Washington, D.C., the Inn is composed of some of the most respected appellate advocates and judges in the country. Events like this one are designed to give future leaders in appellate law a window into not just what this field requires, but how it’s practiced at the highest levels.

TAP attendees also had the chance to connect and gain advice from leading appellate practitioners, getting something that doesn’t always happen in a lecture hall or firm reception: authentic encouragement.
But what is an Inn of Court, and why should it be on your radar?
A Tradition Rooted in Mentorship, Professionalism, and Public Service
The American Inns of Court are professional associations that bring together judges, attorneys, legal educators, and law students from all backgrounds to promote the highest standards in legal professionalism, ethics, civility, and skill.
Inns of Court were first established in England to train barristers; the American version, founded in the late 20th century, has expanded this tradition to include the full legal spectrum, from law students to federal judges. The American Inns of Court now form a national (and internationally respected) network designed to bridge the gap between what is taught in law school and what is required in real-world practice.
Why You Should Get Involved
Even if you’re still in school or early in your practice, it’s not too soon to seek out your local Inn of Court. Many accept student members or offer open events. Others, like the Edward Coke Appellate Inn, focus on specific practice areas and may offer guest invitations.
Here’s why it’s worth your time:
Build your network with people who are serious about their craft and take pride in mentoring the next generation.
Develop your skills by participating in programs designed to elevate legal analysis, writing, and ethics.
Experience the profession beyond textbooks and class rankings.
Contribute to a culture that strives to further inclusion, civility, and long-term impact.
As Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. once wrote, “The life of the law has not been logic; it has been experience.” TAP is proud to be part of creating those experiences—especially the ones that lead to a more just and representative appellate field.
