Our
Purpose
"Appellate courts shape the laws that touch every aspect of our lives, yet the voices of those most impacted are too often missing. I founded The Appellate Project to change that, by empowering a new generation of leaders to bring their insight, diverse lived experience, and excellence to the highest levels of our legal system. When we transform who has a seat at the table, we transform the law itself—and with it, the lives of everyone. Equal justice under law requires no less.”
— Juvaria S. Khan, Founder & CEO, The Appellate Project
Our Mission
We foster emerging leaders as they build a more just and representative appellate field. Through mentorship, resources, and community, we equip future appellate lawyers and judges with the tools they need to thrive and lead. Our work opens doors that have historically been closed and reimagines who gets to shape the law at the highest levels.
Our Vision
We’re working toward an appellate system where the advocates, judges, and rulings from our highest courts reflect the communities they most impact. When appellate courts reflect the perspectives and lived experiences of the full public, the outcomes will be more just, the reasoning more rigorous, and the legal system more credible.
We believe…
Justice depends on representation.
Our highest courts should reflect the communities they impact. Diverse voices strengthen legal decisions and public trust in the judiciary.
Opportunity should be based on hard work and ability—not insider connections.
TAP works to expand access for students who may lack traditional pathways into appellate law but have the talent and drive to lead.
Demystifying the appellate field matters.
You don’t know what you don’t know. Appellate law can feel inaccessible. TAP provides mentorship, community, and tools that make elite legal spaces more navigable and welcoming.
